General information
Phoslo contains the mineral called calcium acetate. This active element is used to treat hyperphosphatemia (a high level of phosphate in the blood) in patients with end stage renal disease. Calcium acetate is bound with the phosphate in the food you take, so it can be eliminated from the body without being absorbed.
Directions
You must consult a doctor regarding a proper dose for you. Avoid taking it longer than prescribed. You can give up taking the medication provided your doctor has permitted it. This medication is taken by mouth with a full glass of water, with or without food.
Precautions
Consult your doctor in case you are allergic to any component of the product; in case you are pregnant (or plan to be pregnant) or breastfeeding a child; in case you suffer from kidney disease or the level of phosphate in your body is lowered.
Contraindications
Phoslo is contraindicated in patients showing hypersensitivity to any component of the medication; patients suffering from hypercalemia (high level of calcium in blood) or patients taking digitalis.
Possible side effect
The most regular and mild side effects include nausea. You must immediately stop using this medication and notify your health care practitioner in case you suffer from severe side effects that include allergic reactions such as rash; urticaria; redness; itching; difficulty breathing; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, tongue; chest pain; stool retention; palpitations; frequent urination; loss of appetite; faintness; mental or mood changes; mental confusion; fatigue; severe or persistent nausea; clumsiness; emesis; depression; excessive thirst; blurred speech.
Drug interactions
This medication can interact with a digoxin, a thyroid hormone (levothyroxine), a bisphosphonate (alendronate), a quinolone (ciprofloxacin), a tetracycline (doxycycline). In case you use one of these medications, you need to adjust your schedule to separate Phoslo intakes.
Missed dose
In case you have missed to take a dose of this medication, take it as soon as possible. If you are already supposed to take the next dose, do not take the dose you forgot and keep your ordinary dosing schedule. Do not take two dosages right away.
Overdose
If you think you overdosed the medicine, immediately contact your local poison center and notify your doctor or pharmacist. Symptoms of overdose include nausea, emesis, tiredness, loss of appetite, mental and mood changes, mental confusion, palpitations, stool retention.
Storage
This medication is stored in a dry place at temperature 77 F (or 25 degrees C) away from sources of sunlight, heat and moisture. Do not store it in the bathroom. Keep this product out of the reach of children and pets.
